Bow Down Bitches (booklet)

Bow Down Bitches is a paper on the theme of contemporary mainstream feminism. It is written as means of understanding the large gap and substantial lack of recognition between academic feminism and feministic efforts of contemporary mainstream media. The paper is about go-getter feminism, martyr-feminism and the transnational 'survivor-inspired' womanhood, which the artist claim is unfixed to a Black experience. Ejlerskov asks if the key revolutionary feminist acts that we yearn for (which will attribute to dismantling society's patriarchal structures) are, in fact, hidden within today's blazing pop culture?
"When writing this text, I was convinced that creating a bridge between these two spheres would further progress the fight for equality. In order to convey a deeper understanding of feminist methods outside of academia, my research, through cross-historical explorations and trans-medial ways of expression, intended to investigate these methods. I wanted to understand the relationship between the gendered body and the public's quest for the 'overcoming' and 'surviving' Black woman. In my view, pop music challenges expectations and is an important historical oral communication form—a never-ending dialogue where no one has the last word. So, the hints to theory, philosophy and to the past that interpenetrate present mainstream production amount to more than just accidental phenomena. Due to the historical context of the enslaved African people in America, I found it important to examine the exotic fetishistic cults around three international African American pop icons: Rihanna (b. 1988, Barbados), Beyoncé (b. 1981, Texas, U. S.) and Nicki Minaj (b. 1982, Trinidad). In my opinion, these women each possess a concealed but deliberately practical model for the implementation of feminism."
